Unlike all the other big manufacturers, we at WMF continue to use traditional forging processes.
Similar to Damascus blades, high-quality steels with varying degrees of hardness are used to manufacture Damasteel®. Instead of forge-welding individual layers and repeatedly folding the steel, these steels are pulverized and combined in a vacuum by means of extreme pressure. This creates a workpiece made from around 120 layers of steel that is then further processed using traditional methods, which of course include acid etching to make every knife an outstanding individual piece.
In this unique procedure, we subject the blades to a precisely controlled heat treatment that optimizes the inner structure of the blade steel. Each individual blade is subsequently measured by laser to determine the perfect grinding angle and is then ground by a robot to obtain an angle with previously unachieved sharpness. This is WMF Performance Cut – for outstanding and long-lasting sharpness that exceeds double the level required by standard ISO 8442-5.
